'My love affair with Bonkbusters led me to write my own,' says culture vulture Matt Cain.
I can still remember the moment I fell in love with the bonkbuster. I was lying on a beach in Spain, engrossed in the opening chapters of Jackie Collins’ Hollywood Wives. A smile crept across my face as I followed Elaine Conti, the pampered and sexually frustrated wife of a fading movie star, into her aerobics class.
And I laughed out loud as she gazed longingly at the instructor’s physique. That was it, I was hooked – and my new love affair came as a complete surprise.
Years of studying heavyweight French and Spanish literature at Cambridge had stripped away my pleasure in reading. But for those two weeks in Spain I drooled, gasped and giggled my way through Hollywood Wives.
After months of feeling like my batteries had run out it was as if somebody had plugged me back in again.
